I have no definite knowledge - I think the last time I saw
the internals of a camera to that level of detail the flash
circuitry was a simple make-or-break switch as part of the
mechanics of the shutter assembly.

I assumed the PC socket continued to be just such a mechanism,
while the hotshoe had progressed to also being part of the
multi-contact electronic flash control system.
