1) It's smaller.

2) If you save 8-bit TIFF, you're throwing away information

There's going to have to be some WB setting chosen.  The question
is whether you select it explicitly, or use the automatic setting.

If you are using the Pentax-supplied Photo Laboratory software,
setting the sharpening to the minimum, and leaving other settings
(saturation, brightness, contrast) on the middle value, probably
comes as close to no modifications as you can manage.

The Bayer reconstruction algorithm used by the Pentax software
(and, presumably, also used by the in-camera firmware) isn't as
good as some of the alternatives (such as Adobe Camera Raw).
If you save a RAW image you can re-process it using a different
algorithm if you find one you like better.
