As an addendum, I think it's not only the holding and examining of the
camera/display that gave rise to the term Chimping (although it may be
that's all that's required).
I'm given to believe that it arose due to certain photogs loudly
grunting "OOO, OOO, OOO" in ape-like fashion, whilst jumping up and
down, pointing to the screen, sometimes exhorting fellow photographers
to see what they captured ("Oooo-ooo-oooo! I nailed it! Come look at
this!").
Nowadays the gutteral sounds are no longer an absolute requirement,
just looking at the screen is enough AFAIK.
