I used to have the instant preview on so I could check the histogram. That got old really fast. As someone mentioned, it's either too brief to help of too long not to be annoying, and it lights up like a neon sign. I check in playback mode, when I have time or just get bored. Of course, for an important shot or a tricky exposure I check quickly, assuming I would have the chance to do it again. If it's really important, I check the focus (as best as I can) with the zoom feature. I have this set to go to 8X (I think) immediately, which is handy.
