I do that, except I also place a finger over the hood near the corner of the frame and slowly move it out until I can see it in the corner of the viewfinder. This tells me just how much margin I have. It's best to use a camera with a nice large-coverage viewfinder (eg K2 or LX).


FWIW I use a 50mm square hood on the K35mm f/3.5 with no trouble.
