Either prices are very different in your part of the world, or you've made a mistake in calculating your costs. Around here a 50-pack of CDs from reputable manufacturers (which is almost enough to store everything on that 40GB drive) costs somewhere in the region of $15 - $20. If you burn two copies of everything, just to be cautious, that still only works out to a little over $1 per GB of storage. Backup on DVDs is now (at last!) even cheaper than CD. DVD media cost about twice as much as CD media, but hold around seven times as much. That get's the price down to maybe $5 to backup your 40GB drive. As for durability; it's too early to tell, at present. But in seven years of scanning my own images (and four years before that burning CDs at work to backup my own personal data) I've never yet ended up with a CD that passed verification at the time of creation, but which later proved to be unreadable.
