If my philosophy is: "I invite you to look at the world (through my eyes)"
His seemed to be: "I invite you to look at my mind through my eyes".

That's fair enough, but when this philosophy is used to judge others, that's
when the chain goes off, IMO.

I think you got it right there -- unnatural and staged. He probably follows
certain formulas when he takes pictures. Like a flower with backlighting must
have reflectors for front lighting too. There are people like that. My former
photography teacher (who I complained about on this list) seemed to have
several "standards"; several "formulas." He's not a bad photographer. He's sold
a
lot of stock photos, which is more than many do. One of his standards was you
should always see at least one eye when shooting an animal. Not always
possible,
methinks, but I could see why he thought it.

I think it's a good photo, it just didn't fit what he thinks of as "good" or
meet HIS requirements; HIS standards.

So I learned, take all criticism from others with a grain of salt. Shoot how
and what you like. Please yourself first and foremost. It's nice when others
like what we do, but it shouldn't be required, or we'd never shoot. Right?

same "standards" to everyone's work.)
