OK time to apologise :) I had a quick play in Photoshop before but it's difficult to clearly show the effect I was describing. It doesn't show on all photos and I really don't have the time to try and find one where it's more obvious.


However I did think of a way to explain it a little better in words: the grain is acting as a dither pattern, which the Smart Blur filter was smoothing out. BTW I'm really that keen on using the Smart Blur filter anymore as it's not capable of handling 16-bit files, and it's pretty slow.

Now I'm going to try and salvage what was a terribly frustrating afternoon, by having a productive evening :)
