Since the first report I've been doing a little research.
By far the most common reports of "banding", in several
makes of camera, come from people using the cheap MagicStor
2.2GB microdrives (which are also battery killers, and
somewhat prone to burnout).

So it looks like an electronic issue; presumably the drives
pull too much current, causing a voltage drop on the sensor.
