Hi all

Well, another week and I managed to get some stuff done. I borrowed a Sigma
70-200 F2.8 zoom for a week. It was raining for most of the time I could
use it, so I only managed to run a few rolls of film through it. The
results I have got back so far are quite impressive.

I was surprised with the weight of it. I was expecting it to be comparable
with the Sigma 180/ F3.5 Macro, or maybe a bit heavier. It felt a lot
lighter though. That may be my imagination, I dunno. I was nicely impressed
with the way that the 70-200, 300/4 and 180/3.5 macro all use the same size
tripod collar. If you owned all three lenses you only need carry one tripod
collar.

The 70-200 range is one that I am not happy with. I find it is either too
long or too short for what I want to do. I was tossing up whether to try
and find a 200/2.8, but I think I'd be better off getting either a 20, 35
or 500mm lens. Any of them would get more use that something around the
200mm range.

When I dropped the 70-200 back I had a look at the new Sigma 20/1.8. Very
impressive, overall. It has less noticeable distortion looking through the
viewfinder, compared to my F28/2.8. One thing I did notice was that
focusing on an object 5 metres away had a distance of about 1.x metres on
the distance scale. It was still well short of the infinity mark, which
surprised me somewhat, especially as the distance scale goes ... 1m infinity.

I also had a look at the 14mm Sigma rectilinear lens. That was extremely
impressive. I could focus on a phone across the room, and almost see the
numbers on the dial, it was so clear.

I don't think I could justify the expense of the 14mm lens, but the 20
isn't too badly priced. Maybe I'll buy it as my birthday present at the end
of the year.

That's enough shit for one day. have a great weekend, whatever is left of it.

Cheers

Jon
