Yeah I have an optical at the moment (I admit I'm still using the Apple mouse that came with my G5). My old PC still has the old ball-type mouse and I did have to clean it regularly, especially when playing games. Since that machine sees little use these days I haven't had to clean it for quite a while.

My partner bought an optical mouse soon after she got her laptop. It's fantastic as it works on any surface. A handy feature when you're sitting on the couch.

though the problem with optical mice is that you have to watch what
surface you use them on..

My current mouse pad is a printed article that someone gave me, about determining proper exposure. I didn't learn much from the article and it's not a very good mouse pad either :) The pointer tends to jump around sometimes. The other day I found a page with some photos on it, which seems to work a lot better.

I must get around to buying a proper pad...
