That's about how I feel about it, too. I think it falls into a kind of halfway stage between a true undistorted image, and the fractured reflection we saw recently (a shot from annsan in Chicago, IIRC). As such, it's neither one thing nor the other, and suffers as a result.
Perhaps an image with more content would work better - I think this particular subject, with a lot of the strength coming from a single shape, doesn't lend itself to this approach.
