I should have also mentioned that our British readers would know *immediately*
what we were talking about, since RCA owns (owned?) a large chain of record
shops in Britain called HMV ("His Master's Voice") and still feature nipper
peering into the gramophone on their advertising.

Phonebooths--without phones--would be great: then I could, when I got a call
on the mobile, walk into a phone booth and talk without having to annoy the
rest of humanity by shouting. It would make hearing the person on the other
side of the line easier, too.
The Washington Metro has pay phones on the platforms, since most mobile phones
don't work in their tunnels. (only Verizon's do, since Verizon has repeaters
built into the tunnels). I've had to use these from time to time, and even
if I'm carrying a mobile on me, I still carry change to use the payphone,
just in case.
