Spyware doesn't necessarily have to even do that; spyware functions can
be deliberately built in to commercial software. Turbo Tax, IIRC, did
that a couple of years ago. There have been several other instances of
commercial software packages that reported user data to their home
offices without user's permission. 
This is all, needless to say, platform independent.

Spyware is the only reason, IMHO, to run a software "firewall" in
addition to a hardware firewall.
