I swear I read somewhere that you could "overfix" BW film and that was another reason I didn't want to change to constant agitation for Fix.
If you are using a sodium based fixer, it's pretty hard to over fix B&W, but it can be done.
With ammonium based fixers, you shouldn't fix much past the clearing time.
With C-41, it's pretty well impossible to over bleach or fix, the whole idea is to remove all the silver anyway.
