So I take it this means it's safe to remove an element or two to clean the inside of a lens? I was under the impression that doing this could result in unsharp photos, since the elements could be out of alignment when you put them back in the lens.

I guess my question is, how careful do you have to be when cleaning the inside of a lens? My old 300mm f4 Takumar could really use some dust-removal, as could a couple of my other M42 lenses.

I have a M series lens that I need to remove the
rear mount to do a little CLA work on but the five
screws (phillips) on the rear are super tight ( broke
a couple of my screwdrivers trying to remove them).
They arent stripped. Any suggestions?

Yes, put the screwdriver into the screwhead, and give a few firm taps on the end of the screwdriver with a blunt instrument (say, an old ME-Super) - the try turning it. Repeat until it gives. Note that the most important thing with screws - especially cross-head screws (Phillips etc) is to apply downward pressure while trying to get them to release - and that the driver be of exactly the right fit :-)
