I can't provide much help. I don't know how they shoot Playboy centerfolds these days, but I can try to find out. I suspect they use large format digital. I know they did shoot huge chromes in the past. I don't think they contact printed them. I believe they made their color separations from the transparencies just as other publications did. A print would be useless for offset printing. Although they probably made some for display and portfolios.

I do wonder how much of the errors you speak of would actually be measurable by any means short of a microdensitometer.


For all that, there is a lushness to large film contact prints that I find hard to describe in words, but once you see it, you no longer need the explanation.
