You are correct in you comments in other posts about small dogs. How they breed for small size is by delaying maturity. A ten year old toy dog is still a puppy in temperament. Really large dogs on the other hand require a lot of finacial maintenance, just the food is expensive.
The AKC has a book on dog breeds that most large libraries would have a copy of. It makes interesting browsing and tells you about the temperament of each breed (of course individual dogs vary).
