I don't know about everyone else, but I sometimes reply directly to someone, instead of over the list, if I don't feel like my message is going to add anything. For example, I often sent "Welcome" messages direct since it doesn't help much for everyone on the list seeing me welcoming a newcomer with "Hiya, hope ya like us". Also, my sender address and my reply-to address are often not the same. All of my normal mail filters through a normal domain that I own. But I check those email accounts through several different online accounts. So, if I'm sending from my mindspring account, the sender address will be at mindspring.com. But my reply-to address is always on the shootingshark.com domain because that's the way to get them into the account that's signed up for the PDML. So just because it came privately, or the reply-to and sender addresses are different, is not necessarily a sign that something's wrong with the list, or even that particular message.
