Although if truth be told, "Woz" was never a big Mac proponent. He supposedly campaigned for further development of the older Apple // platform and fought Jobs tooth and nail when the latter wanted to switch all efforts to the Mac. The IIGS, which had a gui desktop and came out about the same time as the Mac SE, was a pretty competitive platform, but the chip proved to be limited. Or at the very least the chip manufacturers never got serious about it. It's also interesting to note that there was a Mac like shell program that ran on earlier Apple // models long before the Mac was introduced. It was made by Quark and gave you a gui desktop complete with folders and icons.
