I've used the Coolscan 4000 and the Coolscan V for a total of three years and thousands of scans. Never had the problem, but all the scanners I used were cleaned regularly. Might have something to do with it. It might also be noted that there's an optional frame to hold the film. It's the FH-3 35mm Strip Film Holder and eliminates the problem completely. It is used instead of the standard film thingy and is inserted into the scanner via the slide adapter. That information is also in the manual.
