The stange thing is: the batteries ARE new. I had the smae behaviour with tho old ones in the camrey and the new ones, directly from the package.

Your batteries are dead. If they're new, they might be defective. Even
one low voltage cell will cause the camera to behave strangely. And if
you're using the grip, it doesn't matter if the grip batteries are
almost new. If the set in the camera is low, it will mesbehave. Put a
set of new batteries in the camera and see if that doesn't solve your
problem. Paul

Do you know this problem?
My *istD (Firmware 1.1) is running in Auto-Mode. I open the Flash to
take a picture and then the symbol for battery status changes to
"empty". No mather whether the batteries were old or new.
With the flash closed, everything works normal, autofocus inclusive. But
opening the flash even stopps Autofocus.
What batteries are you using?

I can understand why mankind hasn't given up war. During a war you get to drive tanks through the sides of buildings and shoot foreigners - two things that are usually frowned on during peacetime.
