That's a lens everyone should have. And I'm not just saying that from the standpoint of beginning photography classes. I'm saying it because that is a great lens; compact, sharp, fast, versatile, and reliable.

I've rediscovered the 50mm f/1.4 since acquiring my ist-Ds. On that camera, the lens behaves as a 75mm moderate telephoto, while retaining its super fast f/1.4 maximum aperture. Great!

I got mine on eBay a few years ago. Over the years I've always found that as I'm going through old shots, and I spot one that's exceptionally sharp, I'll quickly realize, "Oh, that was taken with the 50".
