I don't think Rufus pays any attention to what *I* want. Actually this was a case of almost missing the shot because I'm so used to seeing Rufus sitting around looking magnificent. But for some reason this time I looked at him as a photographer, and saw that nice sunlight breaking through his fur (originally he was on a different part of the ledge, with even better lighting). He certainly looks very different now from when I first saw him; a terrified, paranoid creature trying to hide away from all the strange people walking near his cage. He had been owned by an old couple, and was used to a very quiet existence. But the husband had died, and the wife wasn't allowed to take her pet with her into the nursing home. He was rescued by one of the local pet shelters, who had him up for adoption in a pet store. We happened to stop by to pick up some cat food, and saw this unhappy animal cringing in the corner of a cage. The next thing we knew we were walking out of the store, with an agreement to provide a foster home for the cat until he got used to people. For the next month or two we hardly saw him; he hid behind the furniture whenever he heard anyone approaching. And as for being able to touch him - forget it. As you can see, we managed to socialize him. But it took a while, and we grew kind of attached to him in the process ...
