They work just like any other SLR does.

It all depends on what field of view you want. A 24-35mm zoom
lens on the D/Ds gives you field of view equivalent to a 35-50mm
zoom in 135 format. The DA16-45 works very well as a wide to
normal zoom and focuses very close.
