separate drive on a separate controller is better. separate partition on the
same drive avoids fragmentation problems though. after all this, Photoshop
CS still does things in a weird way sometimes. i have a separate drive on a
separate controller, but it sometimes just wants to read its entire scratch
file when running some plugins. 60-80 MB images mostly, in my case.

I'd recommend not using a separate partition, but a separate physical
drive. Otherwise you'll just be making the heads move twice as far to do
the same thing.
