I think you're right that the orange rind on the sun is not real. Have never seen it with the naked eye myself either. It is there in the raw file as well, and I think this is a consequence of the brutal contrast between the sun disk and the clouds. I'm not sure what the correct term for this is, but "blooming" and "bleeding" springs to mind. I've seen the same effect in other high-contrast scenes, such as landscape contours against a bright sky. The bright areas seems to bleed into the shadows and create a transition zone of a different and often conspicuous colour.

I'd like to ask you one thing - on the last picture (my favorite one) there is a visible line around the sun, which I can't remember I've ever seen - it's real or it's a consequence of used technique (e.g. sharpening, camera sensor....)?
