i most frequently shoot macros with a Canon 500D 77mm close-up lens on my FA* 80-200/2.8 or my FA* 400/5.6. Shaw has recommended this close-up lens many times. i find the working distance too close on my FA 50/2.8 Macro and it's another lens to carry that i don't use for anything else. i'm more likely to carry my FA 50/1.4 or 43/1.9 instead if i really need prime in that range along with an automatic AF extension tube. i am thinking of getting a D-FA 100/2.8 though.

I am going to P.S. my comment. I didn't want to sound boringly redundant
quote "but at the John Shaw weekend I recently attended" (sheesh) I was surprised
to find out how often he uses extension tubes, often combined with a
magnifying filter, to do macro. By themselves with some lens or even combined with a
dedicated macro lens. He even recommended people put a magnifying filter on a
good zoom (he mentioned some specific ones), so they can use it work closer.
(Which is the benefit of using it.) He does it himself (re zooms).
