Be sure to upgrade the operating system to Mac OS X v10.3 (Panther), and do all the supplementary Software Updates, if it isn't set up that way already.
My recommendation would be to install all but one of the updates. I'm having some pretty annoying problems with 10.3.8.
On the other hand, I went whole hog and moved to 10.3.8 immediately after upgrading to Panther.
I'm normally very conservative and let 6 months to a year go by (!) before I try the next incantation of the O/S. But, throwing caution to the winds this time, I find 10.3.8 very benign for me!
I'm not having any problems with 10.3.7 on my iMac 20" or 10.3.8 on the PB G3/500. What sort of problems are you having, Dave?
Tiger? Moving to Panther from Jaguar was enough for a while. Even tho' the Panther move has been a pleasant experience, I find new operating systems have been coming out a little too often. It takes a while to wring out a new OS and learn all the little nooks and crannies, and become comfortable with it.
Right now, I don't see what Tiger could possibly offer me that I'd feel deprived if I didn't have it! <grin>
Major OS releases are following a 13-16 month cycle. In Mac OS X parlance, a major release is a 'dot' release; minor releases are 'dot dot' released, eg: 10.2->10.3 major release, 10.3.6->10.3.7 minor release.
I was working on Tiger engineering releases almost exclusively with my last contract ... there are several compelling things that I'll want as soon as it releases, like Dashboard and Spotlight. Of course, I'm conservative too on my personally owned systems, but not that conservative... ;-)
