Watching water is easily as mind-altering as a fire is. When allowed to... people end up with the thousand yard stare, and turn inward to whatever is just below the surface of their consciousness. The eyes defocus and everything slows down - even time. It's a state of being those whose lives are too busy rarely achieve...and I think they suffer for it.
