OK you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear but I think the result isn't as bad as you suggest. Johns face is well in the shade so it appears darker than if fully lit, his ear however is much brighter. The sky looks like it may have been a little clouded at the rear or alternately a slight over-exposure in the foreground pushed the sky out of normal exposure range, the strange colours around the trees I'd be more likely to put down to lens edge contrast. The front of the shirt seems to be realistically reflecting a clear blue sky and the fried section of the top of the shirt is fried alright but would you realistically expect any better out of film in this same circumstance? Remember most DSLRs equivalent film response (mainly contrast and latitude) lies somewhere between colour neg and colour slide film. > I've got a lot to learn, Rob. Don't we all.
