Dan (the unenlightened) Scott asked multiple questions. I will try to
aswer them from my feeble experience. Others please jump in to correct or
flesh out answers.
: Why is the sky a deeper black in the nonflash photo versus the flash
photo?
I sent a message later to shel to fill in the exposure info on the flash
shot that I forgot. In there I had noted that my brother had noted that the
sky looked lighter in the flash photo. It should have been the same. I used
the S20 HP neg scanner for these. I tried acouple of times to scan the flash
neg as it kept coming out lighter in the sky. When I use the scanner I take
all it's auto levels to 0. It couldn't get it right. When you look at the
flash neg in the loupe the sky appears to match the non flash neg. People
have noted in the past the variations of light and color with the HP frame
to frame. I usually fix em up in PhotoShop Which I didn't do here. These
were just my little test of an AF160 to see the throw of the flash. I was
exposing for the sign on the side of the building in the background. F1.7 @
1/30 for both. I just posted it to show that it helped pick up the palms to
about 50 feet, hence it can be useful in some situations. If I were closer
to the trees it probably would have washed out the closest ones. As it was
shot I was about 20-25 feet away.
: I thought flash made lighter colors whiter and darker colors blacker (like
: the really washedout faces against unnaturally black backgrounds I see in
: our family photos around the holidays
If the background is dark and the foreground subject is washed out or
shows reflection you were probably shooting the flash straight on. The meter
in the camera was also probably trying to even out the exposure, center
weighted and matrix programs could get fooled in these situations depending
on how much of the background is in the frame. Spot metering would pick up
the subject of center only. To get a more even coverage you need a tilt
flash preferably with a reflector to bounce the light off the ceiling to hit
the background and the reflector to throw light to the foreground. I use the
Sunpak 444D for these and get great results. With TTL flash it is usually is
a no brainer. For non TTL, you need experience I don't have. ;) A Stofen
Difuser is another choice for a straight on flash as it's supposed to throw
light at Multiple angles to get the same effect. It's a opaque white box
that fits over the flash head. I have never tried one, but I have one coming
with some supplies from B&H to try. Others could comment. I just got it to
try to get even lighting of the cars when I go to the car shows. I tend to
use the FA20-35 in those situations and Straight on flash. Unfortunately
nothing to bounce off of. The coverage is not wide enough with the 444D.
:is this a color film versus b&w film
: thing?).
No.
: Why do the halos around the streetlights swap locations in the photos? Was
: it rainy or foggy?
As far as the halos go, I was handholding the camera and there is variation
in composition angles on both, maybe thats why.
