Have you tried the Quadtone RIP? You can download it for free and it's quite cheap if you decide to stick with it.
From my very limited experience it seems pretty good, but a friend of mine is absolutely swearing by it. He has had a lot of frustration trying to get good B&W prints, until he got this package.
Almost all of my work is colour and I've found the Epson driver and its profiles to be perfectly adequate. I did download the "higher quality" paper profiles from the Epson USA website.
