I would just add that what processing is done on RAW files is usually
not disclosed by the manufacturer. Some Nikon's cameras RAW
compression is not really lossless, it's probably lossy (though nobody
knows exactly). Some Canon's cameras have RAW files sharpened
internally without user's option or telling him. God knows about
Pentax ;-)

I'm not sure about the Nikon compression. On the Canon, my understanding was that the sharpening is applied as constants in the metadata, and should be undoable.


Yeah, who knows what Pentax does, but I'd say Pentax likely does very little given that they didn't even do bit stripping in the D and do in the DS...
