Hi Shel, I have been using a Jobo for about 10 years now, and
will never go back. Here is what I have found about using a
rotary processor vs hand processing of black and white.
There is a loss of film speed, about 1/2 to 1 stop, depending on
your present agitation scheme. For me, it was closer to 2/3 stop
from my hand processing method. This was the only drawback, and
reoptimizing my exposure development scheme did take some work.
The processing is much more even, and uses far less chemistry
than an agitation inversion tank. I can process 10 rolls of 120
film or 8 rolls of 35mm film in a liter of chemistry.
This brings us to another adjustment that must be made. You
don't use developers at 1:1 with a Jobo. My best results have
been with HC:110, dilution "C".
When I was doing commercial processing, I would regularly use
HC:110 at dilution "A", processing ar 24C for around 3 minutes.
Development was perfectly even.
There are occassions when I still hand process a film, because
you cannot do compensating development with a Jobo because of
the continuous agitation, but not often do I feel the need to
break out the stainless tanks. I havewn't tried Rodinal in the
Jobo yet.
