I think you might have missed something. I've got one of the earlier model of these, and it has a graduated release; the more pressure you put on the squeeze grip, the looser it becomes.
Perhaps the one you tried had the pressure control (the little wheel at the top of the grip) slacked off to the loosest position. I've used mine with heavy lenses; it can even support the 250-600, although there's a little too much vibration for my taste. This newer model (with a much shorter arm) looks as though it may well solve that.
