Thanks to all answered - great info.

I followed Mark's suggestion below and, indeed, it appears to be a reasonably priced and 'almost' risk free process. Probably more risk free than PayPal. So I got the SWIFT code, my bank's peculiar routing number (they don't use the one printed on the check) and sent that and my checking account on to the buyer. Hopefully I'll have the money and he'll have his lens all in short order.

Try describing the situation to a manager at your *bank* and see what the reaction is. Someone there should know if this is safe or not and advise you of any wire transfer fees involved (which the *buyer* will pay, naturally).
