>From what I've read some backs also employ Peltier cooling devices in order to 
reduce thermal noise in the sensors. The suggestion seems to be that in reality 
even with these big chips (9um square pixel sites vs 7.2um in the *ist D/s) 
there are only 12 usable bits to be had before cooling is employed.
