I spent the hot summer of 1976 working on a building site in Bordeaux, and living in a Foyer des Jeunes - a kind of youth hostel. Yes, I was jeune once. Most of the other guys living there were out of work, drawing social security once a month. Towards the end of the month when they had run out of money some of them would drive around Bordeaux and decapitate the parking meters, which they treated as piggy banks.
