Various manufacturers make small protectors for PDAs, cellphones, etc. which work well on digital camera LCDs. Before my *ist-D left the house it had a screen cover - I picked up some (made by Fellowes) at an office supply store. I don't know whether they are necessary, and they do degrade the LCD image slightly. But a friend of mine (with a D100) managed to get a scratch on his LCD, and that's definitely much worse.
