The Leica list has solved the politics/religion/whatever thing in a way that I see as sensitive: Set up a parallel list, where everything goes. If you don't want politics, don't subscribe to it. If you care to see it but don't want to interfere with the photo talk too much, filter it into a different folder. And if you actually like political discussion, just put both into the same folder.
We are a group of people who stay in contact in a daily basis.
