"HI Joe, "Have you tested the 35/2 and the 31 Limited?"
Hi, Paul. I own the 31, and my lab owns the 35. I have use of it any time. I have used them side-by-side, but have not done as systematic a test as I have taken to doing lately. My comments are based on both my experience and the quantitative test results of both lenses in Popular Photography.
If the FA 31 didn't exist, the FA 35 would be the cat's meouw for the D or DS. It is certainly a fine lens, and better value ($$ per lpmm resolution) than the 31. But if you want the utmost, the 31 is it.
Okay, the 77 may be as good as the 31. I am stunned at the results that the 77 gives on my D.
