For me, a 28mm "wide normal" (40-42mm equivalent on 35mm) is generally my most commonly used lens. I already have a 16-45, the 28-105 gives me less overlap at the more tele end compared to the 24-90. It's also half the price.
Interesting choices... I tend to shoot more mildly tele than wide. And I rarely consider a zoom as a 'single lens' solution ... for me a single lens solution is usually a 24-50mm fast prime lens.
