Usually they take out the 3 features you need the most, put in 20 you have no use for and tell you how much they have improved the camera.

What I would like to see in the next D is bigger buffer and way faster writing of raw files - more like the D70 speed. I would also like to see much more consistent TTL flash capability. I have better luck using my old AF400T than the AF360FGZ. In most other ways, the current *istD is doing just fine for me.
But to be able to sell the product, it is going to have to be 8mp or higher and have better AF and better frame rate, etc. Hopefully they don't lose what I like most about the *istD along the way.
