On the DS, there's an option to tell the AF system to activate with the IR remote. I don't know whether this exists on the D.
I use the Remote Control F for snapping pictures of myself and/or friends in a scene where I need/want a record shot. I keep it in the camera bag all the time. I use the CS205 Cable Switch when I'm working with the camera on a copy stand or a tripod, only carry it when I have the tripod with me too. It's easy to make one, but I was lazy and just bought it.
I believe that's the intended usage scenario.
