The original K-mount design allowed the user to mount a lens without looking at the camera.
If you put a thumb on the lens release, and your other one on the lens pimple, then all you had to do was put your thumbs together and the lens was in proper registration.
Sometime between when my dad bought his MZ-5 and I bought my istD, Pentax, in their wisdom, decided to change the placement of the release, thereby screwing up this useful feature.
