Perceived sharpness is tied with contrast, the one factor that I would definitely expect to be improved in a comparison between any quality new lens vs an older lens like the M28/3.5 is improved contrast. Stopped down but before diffraction takes its toll apparent contrast should be optimum if lens coatings and optical design are good. Overall contrast might be playing as much an effect on this test as actually resolving capability?
