G'day John I don't think it's a coincidence, zoom's do tend to suck air in & out. I have't gone off zooms for this reason, I'm just trying to force myself to think a bit more about composition.
Like you most of the dust I had was in there from day one. I put up with it for quite awhile as it wasn't that hard to clone out the dust spots.
