The difference is the P, and only the P, and funnily enough it stands for Pentax. There are two kinds of people in the world. Some people put it in the P, and some people leave it out.

While looking for some info on my SMC-A 35-80/4-5.6 I came across the same lens with the designation SMCP-A. What's the difference? What does the P designate?

Thanks,

John's right. What he's saying is, it all depends on how you prefer to identify a lens.

Pentax, in their lens catalog, call that manual focus lens by it's full marketing name:
SMC Pentax-A Zoom 35mm-80mm F4-F5.6.

On the lens body itself, a little more compacted, it's marked as:
             SMC
        PENTAX-A
           1:4-5.6
         35-80mm

Most ID's shorten it even more, as you've noted:
SMCP-A 35-80/4-5.6
...leaving out all the extra stuff everybody assumes anyhow, such as "mm," "F" and so on..

All in how you prefer to call it.
All the same lens.
