One of the nice things about the UK (which will change if we get ID cards) is that it is not necessary to carry any form of document with you in public. Although, rightly, we have to HAVE driving licences, we are not obliged to have them with us while driving.
Recently we had a man who walked stark naked from Land's End to John O'Groats. The police kept arresting him, and he would appear naked in court, but I don't think they were ever able to make anything stick.
I don't envisage a time when I will wish to walk naked across the country, but it is nice to know the freedom is there to do it, should the desire arise.

I agree. I would be first in line to refuse to carry one.Mike,
I think you're being dangerously optimistic. Loonies like Blunket get a lot of support, and while Blair continues to have a large majority his doting harem will continue to vote for every madcap scheme he puts forward.

I would _love_ to see some gonzo politico try to implement ID cards. They wouldn't be able to build the jails fast enough, though they would no doubt try hard.
I guess it all depends on the upbringing, but between where I have been and my line of work, carrying an ID card is second nature.
Even in the USA you have ID cards issued by states that are just like their drivers license - they just state they are for ID purposes only...
I even have enough time to add to an OT post!
